Ann RALSTON

F, b. 7 April 1759, d. 27 April 1835
     Mike,
I remembered that I had corresponded with Chris Fraley, another descendent of Joseph's who lives in or near Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio. I have written to her (?) for her permission to pass her email address along to you and I am asking you for the same permission. I last wrote to her in June of 1999 so I hope that her address is still good.
Some of what I know about the Ralstons has been passed down through the family. Unfortunately there is no family Bible or other paper trail (Chris has Joseph's Bible). I have tried to document the information that I have but have not been able to do this across the board. The family tradition of several descendents of this family claim that Ann was a Ralston who married a cousin, John Ralston. Obviously he died within a couple of years of the family's trip to this country (date of Joseph's birth). The ship records from Londonderry were among the Hardwicke papers found in the British archives so we were very lucky there. One written source is The Handbook on Irish Genealogy, edited by Donal F. Begley, 6th ed. (revised) published in Dublin in 1984, p. 103. "Passengers list of the ship STRAFFORD for Philadelphia, sworn at Londonderry, 14 May, 1803." There are 3 Ralston families among the passengers, all giving their place or origin simply as C. Tyrone. Our family is Anne Ralston, 34, seamstress, with her children Robt., 19, labourer; Davd., 15, labourer; John, 11 (my ancestor); Jane, 8; Anne, 5; Josh., 2. The other Ralston families are:
James Ralston, 45, farmer John Ralston, 40, farmer
Mary, 40 Sarah, 40, seamstress
James, 15 Davd., 9
Mary, 12 Andw., 7
Davd., 9 James, 3
Josh, 5 Wm., 3
Anne, 2
My family tradition says that Ann came over with her brother and brother-in-law. If her husband's name was John, then James must have been his brother and John was Ann's. I have "lost" James and his family (also Ann's son Robert) but John and Sarah settled in Armstrong County and I think that I can identify their sons among the Ralstons in the county (there was also an unrelated Ralston family in Plum Creek Twp.) Another story passed down in our family was that the question rose as to whether they should emigrate after Ann's husband died but Ann decided that since they had the money for the passages, they should go ahead and emigrate.
For some unknown (to me) reason, Ann and her family got off the boat, supposedly at Wilmington, DE, and lived in Baltimore, MD, until about 1808. Ann is listed in a Baltimore city directory (1805, I think) and she and family (except for Robert) are on the 1810 census in Buffalo Twp., Armstrong County, PA. Ann had two older daughters who were married and they and their families must have emigrated about the same time (but not on the Strafford). Mary was married to Joseph Graham (they had a son born in MD about 1805) and Rebecca was married to George McKean (the name later became McCain).
I can send you a genealogy report on my side of the family if you are interested. I have been trying to find their place of origin in Ireland without much success. I think they probably came from the Strabane area since the surname is found there. I joined the Ulster Historical Foundation and they confirmed that fact. I am thinking of paying them $31 for a feasibility study for a family history workup. After seeing how sparse documents are from that period in Northern Ireland, I doubt if I can find much on my own.
I'll try to answer any other questions that you have. I have not found much about the McCormick family.

BUT THE HISTORY OF Washington Co PA by Beers says that Ann McCready was married to Joseph Ralston son of Joseph Ralston of Kings Creek Brooke Co VA= which is the line of Ralston's that I'm from SO I'm looking for more info on Ann d/o Joseph & Catherine or Katherine McLaughlin McCready of Hookstown, Beaver Co PA. Joseph McCready's will only says his daughter Ann Ralston, his will was listed in Washington Co courthouse.

Hope this helps in your Ralston searching & maybe some others who are looking for info on their ties to the Ralston's in Washington Co PA.
LOVE TO LEARN more on any of these Ralston mentioned in the posting. OR hear from others who are researching some of these folks.
Take care,
& Happy Trails on all your researching in 2000.
Kim Ralston Dresser.1 Many publications identify Ann (Ralston) Kent as the daughter of John Ralston and Christianna Ann King of Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This, however, is not possible.
John and Christianna did have a daughter named Ann, who is mentioned in John Ralston's will (Northampton Co., PA, December 29, 1794). The first piece of evidence that this is not the wife of Thomas Kent is that in John Ralston's will, she is named as "Ann Ralston," not by what would have been her married name of "Ann Kent." (Ann (Ralston) Kent married Thomas Kent in 1778, so by 1794 she would have gone by her married name). In fact, the records bear out that John and Christianna (King) Ralston's daughter Ann married ca. 1803 to Charles Berry of Virginia, and was almost a generation younger than Thomas Kent's wife Ann. The DAR Lineages state that Ann Ralston, daughter of John and Christianna, was born in 1774 and died in Virginia in 1852. This makes any connection at all to the Northampton County Ralstons very unlikely.
John Ralston had a brother, Samuel Ralston, who married Sarah King (Christianna's sister). However, according to his will (1785) Samuel had no daughters named Ann. Nor is there any record of John and Samuel having had a sister named Ann. As Samuel and John, and their sisters Mary, Jane, and Lettice, were the first generation of this Ralston family born in America, it seems unlikely that Ann (Ralston) Kent can have any connection to the Northampton County Ralston family. Ann RALSTON was born on 7 April 1759 at New Jersey, USA. She married Thomas Kent circa 1 April 1778 at Cecil County, Maryland, USA.2 As of circa 1 April 1778,her married name was KENT.2 Ann RALSTON died on 27 April 1835 at Greene County, Pennsylvania, USA, at age 76. She was buried circa 30 April 1835 at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania, USA.
