About half of Joe's aunts & uncles on Grealy side immigrated to New York, the other half to Boston. after 1985.1 He died on 15 April 2008 at Fort Lauderdale, Broward, Florida, USA, at age 89.2,3 He was Obituary GREALY, Joseph I. 89, of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Passed away on April 15, 2008. Born in the Bronx, NY on August 18, 1918, where he attended Fordham University College and Law School. Joe entered the F.B.I. On September 20, 1940. Prior to and during WWII he worked on Espionage and Sabotage Matters. In New York – the 38 member German spy ring seeking information on the Norden Bombsight. In Philadelphia – the attempt to learn the time and place of the invasion of Europe. Sabotage included the two German Saboteurs who landed on Long Island from a German Submarine and were later captured in New York.
After the war he was transferred to the Seat of Government (Washington, D.C.) He served as a supervisor and lecturer in the Investigative Division. His administration career was interrupted due to a family illness. He discussed his problem with the Director, Mr. Hoover, who that same day, personally transferred him to the Miami, Florida Division. Before leaving Washington he was designated to open the Resident Agent Office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1951.
He retired as a senior resident agent in March 1969 at which time he was appointed assistant superintendent in the Broward County School System, the 7th largest school district in the country. Under his direction, the federal court ordered integration of the school district which was carried out over a three year period without any disruption. Meanwhile, school districts across the country, also under court order, experienced tremendous violence and disruption. He founded the National Association of School Security Directors and served as its President for seven years. As President he testified before Congress and State Legislatures resulting in safe schools legislation.
In 1975 he was selected to work with the Westinghouse Corporation to develop a model school security program. The project results were included in his book School Crime and Violence Problems and Solutions. It was widely distributed throughout the country and Canada.
He lectured at institutions throughout the country and Canada including the FBI Academy and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He made guest appearances on National TV in New York on the “Today Show” and “Not For Women Only”.
In 1975 he was given the “Patriot Award” by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
In 1984 he was one of 12 educators in the US invited to meet with President Reagan at the White House to discuss solutions to school problems. Joe was a Charter member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association, former member of the Coral Ridge Yacht Club, Member of the Hundred Club, Knights of Columbus, and Head of Security for the Inaugural Jackie Gleason/Honda Classic

Joe and June were married for 63 years and raised seven children. June was an accomplished artist and had a love for literature which she instilled in her children. June was selected “Irish Mother of the Year” by the Emerald Society.
Her husband Joseph Grealy died in 2008. She is survived by daughters Joanne Richter, Mary Grealy (Bob Putnam), Anne Grealy (Everett Stonebraker), sons Michael (Blaire Lapides), Paul, Mark (Regina Drennan), grandchildren Meaghan, Lauren, Sean, Graham, Joseph, Conor, Owen, great grandchildren Thomas and Lily and predeceased by son Matthew.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, 731 N.
